Who we are...

The Centre for Frugal Innovation in Africa is part of the strategic alliance between Leiden University, Delft University of Technology and the Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands. We study frugal innovation in relation to economic transformation in Africa to find out where and when frugal innovation is capable of positively influencing the lives of people at the Bottom of the Pyramid (BoP).

Dr. André Leliveld: Frugal Innovations are innovations for resource constrained environments that can be placed on the junction of affordability and good enough quality while still having basic functionality

...And what we do

Frugal innovations are value-sensitive design and marketing strategies that bring relatively sophisticated products, services and systems within the reach of the billions of poorer and emerging new middle class consumers at the Middle and Bottom of the Pyramid. The challenge is not simply to provide stripped down versions to poorer consumers, but instead to provide value sensitive innovations without sacrificing user value.

Prof. dr. Cees van Beers: One of the elements to make Frugal Innovation a success is to make it inclusive so that is fits into the local, resource constrained environment in developing countries
