On 11 and 12 April, the Centre for Frugal Innovation in Africa (CFIA) invited a group of experts on various aspects of Frugal Innovation to The Hague for an input session on the minor programme ‘Frugal Innovation for Sustainable Global Development’. Being mentored by the Centre for Innovation (part of Leiden University), the group was able to put together an interesting minor programme, which will be offered to bachelor students from September 2018 onwards.
Together with academics from Delft University of Technology, Leiden University and Erasmus University Rotterdam, the CFIA management team discussed various aspects of Frugal Innovation and how students should be introduced to this concept. The first part of the programme is organized in a more theoretical way, allowing students to get introduced to frugal innovation in a wide-encompassing manner. Not only will the history and development of the concept be lectured, students are also taught to think critically and be able to assess what is frugal and what is not. Through (group) assignments, presentations, critical essays and personal reflection, students will not only enrich themselves with this interdisciplinary minor programme, they are also able to develop themselves personally. The latter will especially be important in the second part of the minor programme. Students will go on an internship or field work experience abroad, in which they will work together with students from other academic backgrounds. The internship or field work will bring them a practical assignment, which can be a study that needs to be carried out, designing a tool or business model, or providing academic advice for a local partner.
The coming months, CFIA will continue to work on the exact programme of the minor ‘Frugal Innovation for Sustainable Global Development’. Students should be able to enrol into the programme in the spring of 2018.
